Ron-

Wooly Bugger is also one of my favourites for sea run brown trout. But what is a "Viva style butt"??

It means that the fly has a few turns of daylight fluorescent lime green wool at the end of the body and where the tail starts. The rest of the pattern is black.

The original Viva, so named after an old British motor car - the Vauxhall Viva was devised by Victor Furse. It is one of the deadliest lures for rainbow trout.

I used to catch Trout all the time on old patterns like Viva, Sweeny Tod, Baby Dolls, yet i never fish them now, strange how flys go out of fashion.

Do you know Cat I never caught a fish in my life on a Sweeny Todd, although it wasn't for the lack of trying.

The pattern was invented by **** Walker's mate Pete Thomas.

I think as a white lure the cats whisker is a better fly than the baby doll.

As for the Viva, I've caught thousands of fish including American Bass on this fly. I think the Woolly Bugger variant is better.

Cranefly-my own pattern

I much prefer to tie my own and in actual fact, my choices would change according to the season. I spread them out here.

I also fish for Bass in the USA and sea fish with fly in the UK.Completely different flies of course.
I'm quite new to tying and am only just grasping tying on wings!

black tadpole-tied with a little flat lead under body. this fly has caught me many trout, it also acts as a small leach imitation in later season. alexandria-a good fyr imitation. black pennal-agood uzzer imitation. small damsel-a favourite fly in every anglers box. white booby-for when the going gets tough, especially when trout lie deep on hot summer days. diawl bach-another good buzzer imitation.

Still water trout.
Black Buzzer.
Med.,Olive Buzzer
Hares Ear
Greenwell (winged wet)
Appetizer L.S 8
2 inch Black Lure (doubles with size 8 hooks)

These patterns are then followed numerous varieties of P.T.Ns, sedges, etc, etc, etc, just to confuse the issue.

Ron,
Going back to your opening bit, and your comments on the Hawthorn, although I have fished when the fly has been about, and I always found that to fish a couple foot down was far more productive than fishing on top, as on occasions when the buzzer is about during the last hour.

I must admit I have caught most of my hawthorne caught trout on the top.

However I have caught lots on a sunk Daddy.
