I'm a bit late on this thread as I'm not really a game fisherman. However, last year my (then) local chub in Cheshire acquired a stretch of a small river thought to have not been fished for many years. We had hoped for chub and barbel but instead it was large brownies that started to come out. I'd heard of trout to over 4lbs plus the odd barbel and so, armed with strong gear plus halibut pellets I had a go. I fished there just twice and had one fish - a brown of 6lb 12oz! It was like a salmon. I have heard of fish topping the 7lb mark and this is from a river no more than 20ft wide and 3ft deep. Just shows.

No - it was the Bollin. I also know of wild brownies up to 4.5lbs from free fishing on the Goyt in Stockport just above the town. Hardly ever fished and loads of big trout plus chub, the odd barbel and bream. E-mail me separately if you'd like details.
