My two largest Chub were both 6lb'ers and one was caught on the Stour at Throop mill on a large piece of link legered Breadflake; and the other on the river lea from the original old wier pool at Kings Wier on link legered peeled prawn.

Taken on a link-legered large lump of boiled bacon/ham fat mounted on a size 2 salmon bait hook.

Secret is to stay perfectly still (in my case that's dozing) Bite detection method was the rod butt hitting me under my arm :)

I'm embarrassed to say I have had the odd few good chub 'dozing'.... Dropping off with the line in one hand, the rod in the other - coming round in a jolt when sensing the 'knock' on the rod. I'm coming round to the idea that there are benefits on certain occasions to staying put..... Might have to take a delkim though... I'm like a cat - can sleep anywhere:eek:mg:

My biggest chub inhaled a Mepps aglia blade type spinner half-way down it's throat. Otherwise of those that I've weighed nearly all the biggest took cheese paste on very cold days at back-end of the season

Its that fish that inspires me Rubio.... this river will throw up a real biggy again! Some of it is chasing wraiths and shadows. But that they are there is knowledge enough.

My top 4 PB's in reverse order came to maggot, meat, 'S' pellet and king prawn flavored with Turmeric.

What's really interesting about this thread is that as CSG member I see a lot of catch reports from some of the country's most experienced chub anglers and for the most part they catch on cheespaste, bread-flake and meat. This doesn't tally with the impressive results from FM members.
Can I ask, how many of you who posted on this thread were targeting Chub at the time?

Most definitely, trotting single/double red maggot on very small hooks and fine hooklengths (albeit under a very hefty float) can be extremely effective on the Dorset Stour and Hants Avon. The various "specialised" maggot feeder rigs are even more effective in getting the big chub competing for that single maggot.

All of my captures were caught when purposely targeting chub, for me they don't count if I was actively pursuing another species.

Two things that has surprised me somewhat in this thread, is the variety of baits/techniques that have resulted in PB's and I expected more to have fallen too maggots.

Phil,i expect most chub anglers will tell you that the best time for a chub is that last hour upto and into darkness. This is when i,ve caught most, but if its a cold sunny day i have had some good bags then aswell.

Trigga/Trigga ice when cold and clear have produced some great results for me and is my no.1 bait for confident chub fishing! - all sizes 3lb-7lb plus

Pepperami with skin removed, glugged in a mixture of oils and additives... much experimented with to get the volumes of each part spot on... has produced most of my 5lb - 7lb plus chub with colour in the water when the river is fining down after a flood... 8mm pieces

premier matrix rr is always a good bet also... rolled and boiled by self in 6-8mm sizes
