Stuck on the chuffin M25 somewhere between Heathro
Hmmm.....He would say that though wouldn't he ? As I said I dont think there is much to choose between the Mk 111 and Mk IV versions when used for the purpose they were designed for ie floatfishing for tench. I'd probably pick the Mk IV as being a slightly better allrounder. If I was short a TF type rod then I'd have the Mk IV simply because I think it is that little bit "sweeter" then the Mk III and has a screw reel fitting which the III doesn't.

I used my IM8 for roach fishing...it was perfectly OK with 2lb bottoms though you did have to be a bit careful. Where I was fishing at the time there was a chance of a very big fish and I wanted something with a bit more oomph than a standard match rod.

Nowadays you're spoiled for choice when it comes to this sort of rod but I'll never get rid of either of these two.

Well, I got a MK III today brand new never used still has plastic covering the whole handle including the reel seat rings. The price tag is still on it and on the tube £134. It has a 1lb test curve and a 3lb+ power curve and is 12ft 9inch in length, or at least that's what it says on the blank. The chap I got it off (for £50...well chuffed) said he got it about 7yrs back as part of an insurance claim so i'm guessing that's when the MK IV made it's appearance and came into production.

I`ll chuck my pennyworth in and I can only relate to what I`ve collected, I have at least one of each and what I was told years ago by a Drennan rep. It may be a crock of whats`it, so please be gentle. After the various proto types slight differences in performance, colour etc, I was told that the MK1 was the original tench float this is obvious, they all had a black fabric type weave, with the gold edged whippings on the butt section and ring, full cork handle, but it had three incarnations.

1)The Basic standard Drennan Float, with the statement on the underside of the rod, in gold lettering, with coloured stripes - Drennan-Tench Float-12`9” 3-6Ib reel lines specialist power action. Nothing on the topside of the rod

2)The second version , now written on the top side of the rod, Drennan - Tench Float 12ft 9” (all coloured), On the underside , 3.88m performance guide, sensitive float control 3-8Ib plus etc etc.

3)Same as the second, but had single legged rings. Same line rating & performance

I was told that the Drennan Super tench was the MK11, this was the black/grey blank, with a slight move colour at the edge of the whippings. As for the rest I don’t know, I`ve only seen them in the rack.
If this is wrong, could someone enlighten me, its a bit confusing!
Some 13 years later I'm still using the Drennan tench rods, that is the two versions of the float & the Super.
I've also collected a few over the years 😂

On longer sessions when I’m not wanting to carry my rods ‘ready made up’; I’m still using my ‘3 piece’ 13ft Drennan MKIV Tench Float rod for both trotting for Chub and Barbel; and for fishing the waggler for Tench and Crucians and for smaller Carp.

NB: On shorter sessions then I revert to using one of my other Drennan 2 piece specialist float rods ‘ready made up’.

Catching barbel and chub on a tench rod surely that is not possible. You must be mistaken, you can only catch barbel on special barbel rods and chub on chub rods:)

And I've never seen a brench let alone caught one. So that is another rod I don't need. :)

I’m always amused by comments saying such a such a rod would make a brilliant bream rod. The rod in my grandsons magnetic fishing game would handle a bream.

If you had hooked a 5lb bream from the Charente, Lot, Bure, an Irish lough or river amongst many places other than commercial puddles you might question your amusement.

I’ve got the Mk2 and love it. I’ve quite often used it for Carp as well, which in my Vlog below saw 2 upper 20’s landed.

Thankfully not. I havent fished a commercial puddle- know them well do you. A rhetorical question to which i dont want a reply.

So are they any good these rods and do they come in 3 section? Don't want a 2 6 ft section rod with dolly stuck up its arse!
