This expert thing is in the eye of the beholder I think, the more somebody tells me they are an expert the more I doubt it.

I knew many a man with "structured professional qualifications" who didn't have a clue when it came down to using their so called competence in real life.

It's not in the eye of the beholder, would you use a doctor or dentist who had no professional qualifications? I doubt it, I certainly wouldn't. While some may be to a degree incompetent, how much worse would it be, if these and similar positions could be filled by anyone who just set themselves up in practice.

Same again Ray, what the eye doesn't see etc etc.....

I haven't been to a dentist for a long time, I think my teeth are better off without, certainly after my last experience of attempted money grabbing.

My last company medical frightened the life out of me carried out by an expert in Harley Street. My local GP said don't worry he was paid, so he gave you a belt and braces medical!!!

Say's it all to me experts are those that get paid for their "expertise", others just know what they are doing..;)

Hmm! I think I'm changing my mind, its comforting to know people like Walker aren't really experts after all, just a run of the mill everyday angler like the rest of us.

And he said that many many times.

In fact it was he who first said that in angling there are no experts.

But he did say that Billy Lane was the best float fisherman he had ever seen, and so did Fred J to me at a Carp Society conference in the 90s.

Mr Monk

Here's a couple of definitions of expert and specialist from the OED.

a person who is highly skilled or knowledgeable in a particular field

a person who is very knowledgeable about or skilful in a particular area.

Which is which?

A person could be an expert chef that specialises in Italain cuisine or a person may be an expert linguist who specialises in french.

Similarly, a person could be an expert angler that specialises in catching carp.

Don't forget, a specialist might not be very good at what they do!

eg an angler may specialise at catching chub, but might not be very good at it. In which case he would be an in-expert specialist.

Experts are only experts, when they tell everybody they are! :wh

Fred i must disagree experts are only experts, when their peers give them that label,in matchfishing there have been quite a few but not in comparison with the sum total of match anglers.
