Now that the UK has voted to leave the EU the priority must be to ensure that the important environmental protections like the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, Water Framework Directive, Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive and the Habitats Directive are maintained and implemented in full to protect fish, other aquatic species and habitats. This is by no means certain as our Brexit supporting Fisheries Minister George Eustice was busy attacking these measures as ‘spirit crushing regulation’ during the recent referendum campaign. Our fisheries face an uncertain time which is why we need a strong, unified body like the Angling Trust to argue our corner in these uncertain times.
