John Davey, fishing only his second year of barbel fishing, caught the biggest barbel ever to come from the river Dove when he slipped the net under a 15lb 1oz beauty and in so doing set the record straight for the river.

John Davey and the new barbel record for the River Dove

John, from Stoke on Trent, was using a new boilie called Red Crustacean he was field testing for Mick Ball of MB Baits, Leek.

John said, “I’d been fishing for about 20 minutes when the rod went into orbit. The fish went down the river like an express train and while I played it I caught a glimpse of it and recognized it to be the fish they call The Parrot, and panic set in as I knew then it could be 14lb plus. But it ended up safely in the net, and the rest is history.”
