Overview (Press Release)

With more than 1.2 million licences issued to anglers every year, fishing has proven itself to be an ever popular sport. Published in association with Angler’s Mail – which has a weekly circulation of 41,000 copies – this book is the most up-to-date manual of its kind.

There has never been a better time to hunt big fish in British waters as many species have ballooned in size in freshwater rivers and lakes accessible to all. In this eagerly awaited guide, Andy Little, the top all-rounder in UK coarse fishing, shares the secrets of his success. Catch Bigger Coarse Fish is the most authoritative big fish book to be published in many years and rates as essential reading for anglers of all ages and levels of ability.

Every coarse angler will undoubtedly gain valuable insights into the tackle, baits and techniques needed to achieve personal bests from their local waters. The guide cuts through the complexities of the sport to provide positive short cuts to success, offering detailed coverage of all major coarse species including roach, bream, pike, tench, crucians, barbel, chub, rudd, perch, dace and carp.

Illustrated throughout with striking colour photographs from Angler’s Mail photographer Roy Westwood, this is the most up-to-date and definitive guide to one of the country’s most popular sports and will be the best ever companion for any ambitious angler.

Author/Photographer Biographies
Andy Little is a respected consultant for Fox International, the largest suppliers of specialist and match angling equipment in the UK, and has designed many items of groundbreaking tackle, most notably an innovative carp reel series launched earlier this year. He was an Angler’s Mail columnist for more than 20 years and his column was hugely popular as he is regarded as one of the UK’s most accomplished big fish all-rounders. Andy has also written for other leading publications worldwide. Videos, books and regular TV appearances have kept him in the public eye for decades, and his weekly four-page ‘Angling Adventure’ series in Angler’s Mail was unrivalled in the big fish world.

Photographer Roy Westwood is a former editor of Angler’s Mail who now freelances for the magazine and produces stunning big fish images. He has edited and photographed numerous angling books for major publishers and was responsible for pioneering the series: Where to Fish, which had been mimicked many times in a range of UK publications.

These days he chiefly concentrates on angling photography, using Nikon D200s, and has shot ‘Angling Adventure’ with Andy Little.

FishingMagic Verdict

I opened this book not quite knowing what to expect. Would it be shallow and aimed at complete novices, or in so much depth it would be over the heads of most anglers?

It was neither. Considering there are just 192 pages there is only so much information you can give and I reckon Andy has struck just the right balance between being informative and being an interesting read.

The photography from Roy Westwood is nothing short of stunning. I particularly like the early morning shots using fill-in flash. Roy uses the same camera as me, a Nikon D200, and I know that it takes more than just a decent camera to produce a decent shot. You have to have an eye for it as well as knowing how to use the equipment, and Roy has certainly got a good ‘eye’.

All the major coarse species are covered, and there is easily enough detail in the book to set anyone on the right path to catching bigger coarse fish. Fish care tips are included as well as practical advice on catching them with various methods on both lakes and rivers.

I really like this book, both the writing and the photography, I’ve read it thoroughly and flipped through it several times since, and considering it costs just £ 12.99 I reckon you’d be daft not to buy it. It’s an ideal Christmas present, so start dropping a few hints now.
