According to the Daily Mail British Hindus could be given the right to scatter the ashes of their loved ones in the River Aire at Apperley Bridge on the outskirts of Bradford, an area that is popular with anglers.

A spokesman said:

“Making the river a sacred site would provide an alternative for families who cannot afford to make the traditional pilgrimage to the Ganges.

“Steps and railings will be built to enable those taking part to walk down to the riverbank in safety and Hindu leaders hope to erect a small shrine. Rules may limit the number of flowers relatives can throw into the water to limit pollution. The fast-flowing water will prevent a build-up of ashes causing an environmental hazard.”

Although in the planning stage, the scheme seems likely to be given the go-ahead next year. It requires the consent of both Bradford Metropolitan District Council and the Environment Agency.
