Fishmeals – love them or hate them there is no denying their effectiveness for just about every species that swims and if you are after carp, tench, bream or barbel and don’t have some in your bait bag then you are potentially at a very serious disadvantage, during the warmer months at least.

As far as fishmeal-based groundbaits go there are no end of different alternatives on the market at present and, as with all such products, there are some that are good, some that are bad and a whole raft which occupy the middle ground. There are also a few which are a little bit special and the Special G range – which comprises green and gold variants – seems to be firmly in that camp.

So just what is it that makes Special G so ‘special’?

The answer to that is largely down to GPS90 – the highest grade water soluble fishmeal – which ensures the pungent fishmeal attraction quickly and evenly saturates the water around your bait or rig to create an area of intense attraction. Combined with other top quality fishmeals, ground pellets attractants, Special G has forged a reputation as a brilliant fish catcher in the match, pleasure and specimen arenas.

Cage, method, balling, cupping...versatile!A powerful and pungent smell straight out of the 1kg packet we found both mixes had a reasonably uniform particle size and both produced a beautifully light and fluffy mix when wetted, mixed and pushed through a sieve. The resulting mix wasn’t as ‘sticky’ as many of the fishmeal mixes available and as such is less likely to cause problems for those anglers who just want a ‘mix it and go’ fishmeal groundbait but it had more than enough binding ability to hold together a lot of particles and we laced it with plenty of hemp, pellets and corn, balled it up, gave it a quick ‘sheen’ with a little water and easily put orange-sized offerings at range with a groundbait catty without them breaking up in flight.

At the other extreme it also produced a beautiful sloppy mix for an instant cloud of high attraction, whether used via a pole cup or for a sloppy spod mix.

On its own it created a nice method feeder mix and, combined with a little ground hemp to give it a bit of ‘fizz’, a brilliant cage or stick mix which gave a nicely explosive result. We are told by the match lads it can also be mixed into a terrific paste hookbait too, making it one of the most versatile groundbaits around.
