Sportfish have teamed up with famous barbel fishing guru, Bob James.  Bob is your host for two days on his favourite river, the Wye. You’ll be staying just a stone’s throw from a beautifully unspoiled, hardly fished part of the river which boasts beautiful surroundings and superb fishing for chub and barbel, all in the company of a true angling legend.

Bob will give you the perfect welcome on the river, which he knows intimately from long experience. You will meet in the Belmont for drinks on the evening before your first day’s fishing. Bob will talk through his experience with barbel since 1963 and Wye barbel from when he and Chris Yates first attempted to find let alone catch them! Bob will give you an insight into location and what makes a barbel swim, effects of weather and water conditions on the fish and a successful approach. Bob will also look at methods and he employs many tactics including: trotting, touch ledgering, quiver tip, bolt rigging and fly fishing.

Bob James with a typical Wye barbelOn the river Bob will either demonstrate or guide you as you prefer. Talk about baits, natural and man-made, and the way fish respond. You will learn to see what is there, how to read it, how to catch and to appreciate and enjoy… Bob’s emphasis is on enjoyment as much as technique and you’ll discover the craft of catching barbel and chub, as well as getting a deep insight into the river itself and how to tackle it.

You can bring your own gear – but Bob would also be delighted to share some of his favourite tackle from Hardy Greys, with the emphasis on pleasure as well as a great catch. It all adds up to a fishing experience you’ll never forget!
