When I wrote my ‘On The Chub Trail’ series it was a long held ambition to catch a brace of sixes. Although I have caught a fair number of sixes the brace has always eluded me, although I have come close a few times.

Last Thursday, 26th February, I was feeling pretty good so I decided to have a day on the Stour. I figured that the chub would have started to shoal up prior to spawning so I fished one of the swims I did well on at the end of last season.

I decided to opt for the maggot feeder approach. I didn’t catch anything all morning so it was a nice surprise to hook into a decent fish at around midday. After a good fight a large chub was netted. The scales went around to 6lb 6oz and it was a nice fat fish. The fish represented a double landmark, my 20th chub of over 6lb and my 200th chub of over 5lb.

I sacked the chub as the wife was due to visit me later in the afternoon. About half an hour later I hooked into another good chub. This was another nice fat fish and the scales registered just over 6lb. I was delighted as this completed my long awaited brace of sixes and I sacked the fish with the other one.

There were no more bites that day. Pam arrived at about 3pm and photographed the brace for me. The photos were completed just in time, before it started snowing heavily.

I felt my luck was in so I went out the following morning, Friday 27th February, in all the snow. I caught a big chub almost immediately. I thought it was another six but the scales read 5lb 14oz. By the time midday came around there had been no more bites and I was freezing so I went home well satisfied. I felt unwell all weekend so did not get out but I went on Monday 1st March and blanked, and then again yesterday, Wednesday, and got one of 5.13.
