Bury Hill Fisheries Tsunami Predator Open took place on Saturday 12th February and what a great day it was, a complete sell out with just short of 80 anglers lining the banks of the old lake which included 16 boat anglers.

The good news was that it did not rain, well not too much, although the high winds did make life pretty difficult for everyone and in particular the boat anglers with a number of boats being blown against the far reed bed at the end of the lake which is were they were left.

Despite the weather, overall the fishing was pretty good with 30 odd fish being caught on the day, 19 pike, 9 zander and a 6lb 8oz tench, which was caught on sardine dead bait of all things by Peter Palmer. However it was clear early on that the zander were not going to play ball with everyone missing takes and losing lightly hooked fish, a typical trait of the zander when they are in a finicky mood, which left the pike to save the day.

Indeed, I myself missed four good zander takes despite winding down and feeling the fish tug before striking, although after 6 hours in a boat on a windswept lake, I was not sure that I could feel anything let alone my hands!

The prizes were divided between boat and bank with three top prizes for each section plus prizes for the largest pike and zander together with 8 section prizes, so lots of prizes to be won. On the bank, 1st prize, £ 300 of Fox tackle went to John Allen who caught two pike for 22lb 14oz which included a lovely female fish weighing 18lb 8oz, if that was not big enough, 2nd prize went to Peter Evans with an even bigger fish weighing 19lb 4oz whilst 3rd prize was won by Mr Swigooki who caught two small pike for 11lb 4oz.
