The rig – Xcite in a PVA mesh bag
Sometime towards the end of last year Ray (Dale Smith – Carp R Us main Man) gave me a bag of foul smelling yellow powder and a tub of yellow mini boilies and said, “try these and let me know what you think.”

The yellow powder turned out to be the new Xcite carp-it feed in Squid & Octopus Flavour – a new flouro groundbait designed for fishing the ‘dynamite stick’ method of PVA bagging and the boilies were his new mini critters which had a small bag of pop-ups and the rest being sinkers (the finished release also comes with a free ‘Critter Rig’ in each tub).

After playing about with various rigs and presentations I found the best way to use these was with a string of sinking boilies on the hair (2 or 3) with one pop-up on the end to make the rig semi buoyant. I then filled a small tube of Korda’s excellent Boilie Web with the groundbait and threaded it onto the rig (see pic).

I found the boilies moved slightly with any water movement which in the winter I find to be an advantage for getting the carp’s attention. (I also added one phial of Carp Ultrabite to the groundbait when I mixed it which seemed to really bring out the squid & octopus smell of it – which I hate, but the carp seem to love!)

The groundbait is moist enough straight from the bag to put in the PVA tube – I think this is more oil than water as I’ve never had a problem with the bags dissolving. I find by mixing the Ultrabite with roughly two handfuls of bait it lasts me a day session and creates a nice consistency.

There are loads of interesting looking bits and pieces in the groundbait including hemp, crushed nuts, aminos, oils, betaine and more – check out the excellent packaging for more info. Also included is a leaflet with suggested uses and rigs.

Xcite Carp-it Feed is available in two colours – red or yellow and in pineapple, squid & octopus or Frutex flavours.

ROB HARDMAN’S VERDICT

I used this on one rod all through the winter fishing an easy ‘runs’ water and it always seemed to produce a fish for me when I was struggling, all in all a couple of excellent products and well worth checking out.
