Reading youngster Stephen Kingswell had the shock of his life when he fished the Match Lake at Burghfield. The lake holds only small carp in the 3lb to 5lb bracket – or so he thought – until he hooked into an 18lb 2oz mirror that took him over half an hour to land.

The fish, that was fooled with a floating dog biscuit on 6lb line from peg 30, sets a new best for the water.

It is not RMC Angling’s policy to allow carp in the Burghfield Match Lake to top double figures and they are usually transferred to the adjacent Blue Pool when they start to get too large. This specimen has clearly avoided capture for a fair while and congratulations go to Stephen for landing it.

This particular carp was returned to the Match Lake so another angler is due for a surprise in the not too distant future.
