Peregrine Fishing Tackle, 14 Years On

Peregrine are one of the few smaller British companies that have survived the battle to stay buoyant in a world where the smaller fish are usually squeezed out of business.

This is mainly down to the skill and enthusiasm of Peregrine boss Roger McCourtney, who loves fishing as much as his customers do and likes nothing better than testing out his own products at every opportunity. He’ll tell you that he often goes out in horrendous conditions just to make sure a new product is exactly right. Sounds like a good enough reason to go fishing to me Roger, you don’t have to make excuses you know!

Peregrine’s speciality is custom rod building, often on Harrison blanks. The rods are built to exacting standards of craftsmanship and not made to just cast a given line weight. They make them with specific angling situations in mind and select those materials which are most suitable.

Each rod in the Peregrine range is different; they do not use the same blank type throughout but rather choose the best available for the particular rod and its intended use to ensure optimum performance.

Peregrine rods are different from the norm. They are made by a small team of fishing rod makers who know exactly what they are doing.

Let Roger pick the story up from here:

“Peregrine have been around since 1992. We started off making fly rods, associated clothing, and various gizmos. All very high quality.

About four years ago, due to coincidence and my personal interest in barbel fishing, we started to make the odd barbel rod.

“These were very well received and we soon realised that there are a lot of specialist barbel anglers looking for state of the art specially designed barbel rods. Many of these discerning anglers also want British built product too.

“We now have seven barbel rods in our range. Actually this will soon be eight as I am working on another. Watch this space!

“Although we have our stock range we are able to ‘spec build’ rods to virtually any spec within reason.

“Our policy is to use only well proven components and neither do we ‘guild the lily’ with fancy looking bits that have no effect on performance.

“It is heartening to hear from customers that have had a good catch or a personal best on one of our rods. This happens a lot with our ‘Soft Top Flood Rod’. Because of it’s unique properties, guys are fishing in conditions that perhaps they wouldn’t normally and are rewarded with barbel they wouldn’t have caught trying to use rods that wont cope with flood conditions.”
