Master river match angler, Dave Harrell, DH Angling, set a new match benchmark for the River Severn with an amazing catch on the second day of the Upton-On-Severn two day festival with a colossal catch of heavyweight bream.

Dave explained just how he set the river record to an all time high of 213lb:

“I decided to fish the match in a totally positive way as I knew the peg had form as my good friend Matt Maginnis had pleasure fished it and caught well in the week. So, when I loaded the car I decided to put two keepnets in, just in case!

I was going all out for the win. I set up two Daiwa Spectron 1113P feeder rods, both teamed with Daiwa TDR reels, 10lb main lines and three foot 0.20mm hooklengths tied to size 12 Kamasan Animal Spade hooks. Later when it was apparent that the peg was solid I changed to a size 10 tied to 0.23mm hooklengths…definitely a take no prisoners approach!

My feeders were large Nisa types with 1.5 ounces of lead but during the day I also caught on a straight 2oz bomb.

Groundbait was two thirds brown crumb and a third Dynamite Marine Pellet groundbait and I got through four pints of casters and about half a kilo of worms.

It took 45 minutes to get the first bite and then I caught 38 fish up to 8lb steadily throughout the match. Oh, and a perch!”

Dave has recently launched a new tackle company, Dave Harrell Angling and his first product lines include river and pole floats, I’d suggest he add feeder rods and terminal tackle straight away!
