Not many opportunities to go chubbing have come our way so far this winter but we managed it yesterday for the first time.

Graham with his first chub of the winter

So, off we went to the Ribble, armed with bread, cheese and a some mashed bread for feed, arriving about 2pm, which gave us plenty of time to feed the swims and be well settled in before dark.

The river looked good, a little over normal winter level and with a tinge of colour. The bad news though, was that there was quite a lot of dead leaves coming down that continually fouled the lines and preventing the bait from staying in one place for long enough.

For a couple of hours I had several minor bites, which I put down to small fish, while Dave had just one decent bite that he didn’t connect with. Bread or cheese, it didn’t matter, I couldn’t buy a really good bite.

It didn’t get any better after dark, except for one ‘proper’ bite to me that hooked itself and turned out to be a nice chub that I didn’t weigh but was a mid-three.

Two hours later and we couldn’t get a bite at all so we called it a day.

Ah well, the best laid plans and all that. Next time we’ll clobber ’em!
