In this book, John Cawthorne uses his artistic skills to depict the flowers, plants and insects that are of interest to the fly fishermen.

Divided into sections covering upwing flies, burrowing nymphs, darters, emergers, spinners and sedges, John’s meticulously detailed illustrations depict the insects, the flowers that form part of their environment, and the artificial flies required to imitate them. Using this book, the fisherman can clearly identify the bankside wildlife and plan his fishing tactics accordingly.

Superb illustrations
There are some seventy colour plates, a guide to insect identification and scores of fly dressings.

John Cawthorne is a keen fisherman with a background in art and a particular interest in nature and wildlife. He is author of the acclaimed ‘The Fly Fisherman’s Entomological Pattern Book’ where he first combined his fishing and artistic skills.

FISHINGmagic VERDICT

An excellent reference work that will be invaluable to the flyfisherman. The illustrations are quite superb.

The insect, for instance, is described in detail and then there is a cross reference of information detailing its relationship with which plant or flower, where it is found and how you can best tie an artificial fly to imitate it.

But it is much more than that, the book is obviously written by a passionate angler who, like myself, has no time for those anglers or river keepers whose sole purpose, respectively, is to generate an ever increasing tally of fish or sale of tickets.

If you’re not a flyfisherman don’t let that stop you from buying this book. It is full of very interesting information that will increase your knowledge of all fish and their environment.
