Zhiyuan Gong, a biology scientist at the National University of Singapore is developing GM zebra fish with colours that can be switched on by the presence of chemicals in the water, says news.ft.com.

Professor Gong has bred fluorescent colour genes into the zebra fish which will indicate the presence of oestrogen hormone and heavy metals in water. So far these are the only two detectable pollutants by the fish.

The zebra fish will change to a specific colour when a certain chemical is present in the water. The colours can be seen in ordinary light but show up far more when viewed under a blue or ultra-violet light.
