As a supply teacher and author of educational resources, Cliff’s attention was drawn by his publisher’s web-site request for submissions on ‘Leisure and Tourism’; this was his longed-for excuse to write the account of his mammoth 70s cycle-ride.

The Synopsis

Disillusioned and frustrated by his pupils’ devotion to the play-station and their clear lack of worldliness, he feels certain his youthful adventure will serve as a spur to young people as yet unaware of what the world has to offer. With many colour photographs, ‘Get Out There!’ takes the reader on an informative, fast-moving and sometimes perilous journey from Harwich to the Greek Capital and back to England: just reading about biking over the Swiss Alps will leave you exhausted…

Aside from the facts and chronology, how can cultures and lifestyles differ so dramatically on crossing a border? Why do some youngsters feel the need for drugs when the highest-possible ‘highs’ can be experienced safely – and for free? What can equal the thrill and freedom of travelling under your own steam? In 120 pages, Cliff’s over-riding aim is to engender a ‘can-do’ spirit in young adults looking for responsibility and the opportunity to develop as individuals. He believes that a similar experience would benefit anybody and everybody, but for those without an academic streak an adventure along these lines could prove invaluable – things kind of happen when you travel.

Cliff says:

“A mere £2.55 buys you five months of someone else’s back and heart-break!”
