Window of Opportunity

For three or four weeks before our dungeon master Graham and his pal Dave came up north to pay us a visit on the River Lune, I’d been watching the river levels very closely. We’d previously decided that we’d get together on any convenient Friday. Unfortunately the Friday we chose was just two days too early, river level-wise, and we just missed out on a big bream haul by a couple of local anglers, 14 bream and 3 over 10lb.

This window of opportunity only lasted a couple of days then the river was back up again. So I spent another couple of weeks watching the river levels again and this time I wasn’t going to be caught out. On Tuesday, 5th March, the river looked like it may possibly drop towards the magical figure I’d been waiting for (more about the actual figure in a forthcoming article), but there was the possibility of a big storm blowing in around mid-night.

Should I risk waiting until Wednesday, in the hope that it would get a wee bit lower or should I make a big effort to reschedule my work and try and get down to the river?

I decide I couldn’t risk the wait, with the close season looming, and so I went for it. It paid off, I had six fish totalling 47lb 14oz, the smallest being a 4lb 11oz hybrid and the largest a beautiful bream coming in at 10lb 11oz.

What a good decision, for at 03:00hrs the following day the river bottomed out at the magical figure then in just 12 hours it rocketed up to 2.24M and the river was in full flood. This window of opportunity was just over 24hrs and this time I got it right.
