BT has developed a clever way of keeping an eye on your home when you’re not around. BT Home Monitoring is a 24-hour security and reporting system using the internet to alert you of any disturbance at your home.

The system uses a set of wireless sensors placed around the home or garage to detect movement. A control panel picks up the signals from these sensors and if it detects anything unusual, it not only sets off an alarm, but also sends a phone call, text message or email to your three nominated contacts. So you can have a text message sent to you at the riverbank, have your neighbour called at home and your partner emailed at the office, for example.

The control panel has to be connected to a ‘phone line to work and you’ll also need internet access at either home or work to set your private monitoring account up. But you can install the whole thing yourself without an electrician.

And the cost? The home monitoring system will set you back £ 299 for the equipment (a control panel, a wireless magnetic contact for a door or window, 2 infrared wireless movement detectors, a keyfob and all fixtures and fittings) and 12 months’ monitoring. You’ll have to pay extra if you want more detectors (about £ 30 a go) and after the first 12 months the monitoring fee is £ 5 per month. You can also get smoke detectors to integrate with the system. It’s available now from BT and Homebase stores.
