A shoal fish that can sometimes be found in large numbers

Preferred Habitats

Chub thrive in most waters from fast rivers and streams to large gravel pits and lakes. In the rivers they love to stay close to shaded, quiet places like reeds and weedbeds and overhanging trees and shrubs. Fond of living under under floodwater raft swims.

Best Feeding Times

Dusk to a few hours into darkness best, but will feed almost anytime when the conditions are ideal

Natural Food

Insect larvae, crustacea, molluscs, frogs,tadpoles, small fish, crayfish, slugs, worms, almost anything edible

Maturity

Males 3 – 7, females 4 – 8 years

Spawning Times

May to July

Preferred Spawning Areas

Mainly over gravel

Fecundity

20,000 to 30,000 eggs per kg of body weight.
