3rd September 2001

September already, I wonder how many of us anglers are takingstock of our season with the thought that we have yet to get round tothose promised fishing trips, planned in our heads at the beginningof the year; thousands I expect.

What did August bring us? Weather-wise it brought us little towrite home about, nevertheless the month was notable for somespecimen fish, such as the 33lb catfish from Lymmvale, a 4lb-4-0perch from Founders Pool and catfish up to 20lb-12, 10lb plus tenchfrom Whitley Pool and a 31lb carp from Shakerley Mere.

Also during August Tabley Mere fished better than it has for manyyears, boat keeper Baz Rhodes has himself reported excellent catchesof tench, rudd and the occasional carp to 14lb, other waters haveperformed very well although the month was blemished by adeoxygenation of Longbarn Pool, which has since abated.

September is the month when many serious specimen anglers take tothe bank. As natural food diminishes fish are not so fussy in takinganglers offerings, spurred on by the fishes instinctual desire topack weight on to see them through the lean winter months. Why notfollow suit, and refrain from putting your tackle to an early bed andcontinue to venture out to the waters at this most fruitful time ofyear, the rewards can be spectacular.

Last weekend Spring Pool benefited from a stocking of cruciancarp, courtesy of the Club’s fishery department. These fish weretransferred from Antrobus Golf Club stock pools. Work will continueto stock Spring Pool, although the matter has been made difficultthis year due to foot and mouth restrictions, and new directives fromDEFRA (formerly MAFF).

Member Peter Scott reported another excellent days fishing lastweek, this time at Woodside Pool where he caught tench to 5lb, ruddto 12 oz, crucian to 1lb and a grass carp of 12lb. Peter pointed outthat it was a fish a chuck, with no rest in the action for the wholeof his session.

Members are reminded that only fibreglass rods are allowed onWoodside and Dukes Pool.
