17th December 2001

Heavy frosts throughout last week lead to some waters becoming frozen, or partially frozen up. This situation put payed to many plans to go out fishing, as there have not been many members out fishing all week. The same can be said of our day ticket waters, which have all been equally quiet.

Pike anglers are the ones making the most of these poor conditions because, if nothing else, the clarity of water does favour the hunting and feeding habits of pike. Member Jeff Smith informs me that pike anglers have been doing very well on the Sankey Canal, with many fish caught at Sankey Bridges before it froze over.

Kevin Peers reports that members Ged Bliss and Alan Pinnington have all but had Village Pool to themselves, although even they have struggled a little, landing only small fish, as did Committee member Eddie Rothwell in a session there last Sunday.

However, Alan Pinnington’s fortunes changed when he moved over the road to Whitley Pool, where he landed several carp, two of which he weighed at 18lb-3-0 and 17lb-6-0.

Members fishing a Club match on New Pool last Sunday, also struggled for bites with just a few catching the odd skimmer and roach.

At the moment it’s Farm Pool and Grimsditch that have provided the most consistent action, although again it is only the small fish that have obliged.

River reports have been very slow over the last week, with the only one in from member Dave Sharp who landed half a dozen grayling from Wincham Brook, with two small chub and a dace complimenting his catch. Dave trotted worms under a small stick float to get his fish. He pointed out that static baits resulted in no bites whatsoever.

Last week I gave out the wrong telephone number for Mick Gater. His correct phone number is 01925 861018. Please contact him if you are interested in any of the water keeping vacancies.

Eddie Rothwell has asked me to inform our pensioner and disabled members that the Club’s bulk administration evenings commence on Wednesday, 3rd January, at the Manor Lock Public House on Grange Avenue, Latchford. These evenings commence at 7.45 pm each week, and offer an opportunity for members to earn their overstamps by undertaking light duties. These evenings also offer the opportunity to chat to fellow members in a pleasant and warm environment.

I can be contacted on 01925 411774.
