25th February 2002

Only the hardiest of anglers ventured out at the backend of last week, due to wild weather conditions dominated by gale force winds, hail storms, rain and even snow. This led to a lot of work being required by water keepers and Club officials, to tidy up broken branches and other wind damage debris.

Unfortunately, due to the poor weather conditions, there hasn’t been a flood of fishery reports over the last week. However, Phil Wain and Jon Pearson did have a worthwhile night session on Belmont Pool last Saturday night, Sunday morning. Jon landed a trio of carp, his biggest being a mirror of 15lb-2-0, and while he had the biggest fish Phil made up for it by catching more fish.

On the subject of carp, Committee member Jeff Spencer relayed a report from member Graham Danson, who hooked and landed a 12lb-0-0 carp whilst fishing on Grimsditch Mill Pool last Sunday. “Nothing unusual in that” you may say, except for the fact that he was fishing on an extremely light pole set up. Graham’s set up consisted of a number 2 elastic in his pole, size 24 hook baited with a pinkie, which lead to an arm breaking forty minute battle to keep the fish on the hook, with mission accomplished when he slipped his landing net under his prize. As you can imagine, following the capture of this fish, Graham immediately beefed up his tackle, just in case he hooked into another one.

Water keeper Dave Inkson reports that Grimsditch has been fishing well with some good roach reported amongst the skimmers. Dave did point out that whilst the water is generally fishing very well there has been a couple of days when action was very slow following overnight frosts.

Work party attentions were again directed towards Whitley Pool last Sunday, where there has been a number of new fishing positions created. The amount of work required to do this is testament to the resourcefulness of the Club’s estate maintenance department, and attending work party members.

Members please note that work parties change over from Saturdays to Sundays, as from next weekend. Therefore the next work party commences at 9.00 am next Sunday (3/3/02), meeting on Whitley Pool car park.
