Although restricted, fishing for Lymm Angling Club members hasshown some silver lining to the black cloud of enforced closures.Village Pool, which has been kept open for the first time throughwhat was the old closed season, has been a little gem of a fisheryfor those who have earned their red overstamp.

Last Friday, despite freezing conditions, the water produced itsfull range of species to the few members who had braved the elementsto fish. Roach, perch, bream and carp where amongst the fish caught.Last Sunday action was beginning to settle on the carp, which gaveamongst others, Eddie Rothwell, some anxious elastic stretchingmoments, before landing nets could be slid safely under them.

Member Ste’ Daley reported catching roach and rudd of around thepound mark. He pointed out that he had to use a slider float to reachthe bottom to find these fish, as Village Pool is now twelve feetdeep in places. Ste was using caster on his hook, and managed to landforty to fifty roach and rudd, with over a dozen of specimenproportions.

Over the road on Whitley Pool, action is a little slower.Nevertheless, the bites gained are from a much heavier stamp of fishlead by uncoloured goldfish, which feed more readily than their carpcousins at lower temperatures. Uncoloured goldfish are often mistakenfor crucian carp, as they are extremely similar in appearance.

Grimsditch Mill Pool is another water fishing well at the moment, skimmers, rudd, perch and carp are the main species in this water, and all have obliged members and day ticket anglers alike. Favouredbaits at the moment is punched bread, casters and worm, whoseeffectiveness can be increased by forming cocktails of these baits.

Please note that groundbait is banned on this water, althoughliquidised bread can be used in moderation, which can be veryeffective when used in conjunction with feeders.

The effects of the foot and mouth outbreak is far ranging, and hasprevented the Club from undertaking work parties on the closedwaters, and fishery management programs on all waters. The maineffect of this will be the need to undertake basic maintenance, onthe waters currently closed, as soon as they are opened. At thatpoint the Club will be looking for assistance from the members torapidly address the required work. In order for our maintenance crewto plan a schedule of required work, it would help them greatly ifyou were able to help to give them your contact details. If you canhelp, please leave your details with Ian Nicol, who can be contactedon 0151 228 3984.
