Tiny new water Manor Pool at Thelwall is still coming up with one or two surprises. Committee member Ian Taylor spent a couple of hours on there to see what it holds. Unfortunately for Ian he spent a good deal of his session upgrading his tackle due to being ripped off a number of times. Properly tooled up, Ian landed a number of carp around the four to five pound mark.Earlier in the week Ste Daly spent some time fish watching on the water and spotted a fish he described as a football shaped carp of about twelve pounds which was swimming with a number of fish three or four pounds smaller than it. No doubt the waters continues to harbour one or two more surprises.

Bailiff Jon Stubbs enjoyed a productive session on Sandybank Pool, where he landed a bag full of carp from the margins. Whilst landing these carp up to eight pound he spotted several ghost carp estimated as being over twenty pounds, which he had to ignore as he did not have the tackle to deal with them.

On Lymmvale specimen hunter Phil Corley continues to land chub of massive proportions, including fish of six to seven pounds. He also remains on his quest to regain the national golden orfe record, a record still attributed to a Lymmvale fish.

Members visiting Lymmvale may notice some further work done to open up some new fishing positions. This work has been necessary due to the restricted fishing caused by the high water levels, albeit done in such a way that it does not impact on the natural beauty of this water.Such work on Lymmvale, and other waters, continue throughout the year. If you can help then please contact Mick Gater on 01925 861018.

On Whitley Pool the main source of action has transferred from tench to crucians, uncoloured gold fish and carp. There is evidence that tench are spawning, and this will explain why they have stopped feeding in earnest. However, when the spawning cycle finishes they will again feed hard to make up for lost time.

The work on the new pools on Belmont Estate has now stopped, except for some landscaping work. The larger one of the two is filling up nicely and has been dug to create a variation in depth ranging from four foot to nine foot. It is hoped that this variety of depth will facilitate all year round action by carefully selecting the species range that will be stocked. These new waters are spring fed, which will hopefully guarantee good water quality all year round. At the moment we are waiting for some pond life to establish prior to making any stockings.

The last of this years organised work parties is scheduled for the 9th June when work will be directed to the River Severn stretches around Shrewsbury. This work party facilitates members to earn next year’s gold overstamp in one day. If you are interested in joining this work party again contact Mick Gater for meeting and travel arrangements.

I can be contacted on 01925 411774.
