Last year you very kindly help to advertise our charity fishing match. It proved to be a huge success raising almost £ 2,000.

Spurred on by this success we are holding the Marie Curie Predator Cup 2002.

More than 100 took part in last year’s event, which raised almost £ 2000 for the Marie Curie Cancer charity. But the river’s renowned pike and zander weren’t quite as obliging, with Peter Jones’s 10:12 pike taking the winner’s slot.

What is certain is that the Ely Beet stretch, where the match will again be fished, is capable of far bigger fish on the right day.

The draw takes place at 7am at the Ely Beet Sports and Social Club, in Lynn Road, Ely. Tickets are priced £ 10 and there are cups for first, second and third, along with the best individual pike and zander.

Competitors must register in advance and we’re hoping this year to double the number of entrants.

But registrations are coming in fast so I would urge anyone interested to contact me (see details in box below).

Favoured draws are between the bridges at Potter’s, Queen Adelaide Bridge, Foremill Wash and the Lark infall. But good fish can and do come from anywhere on the river, which has produced plenty of double figure zander in recent seasons as well as pike to nearly 30lbs.

MARIE CURIE PREDATOR CUP

The date for the Pike and Zander match is Sunday 27th October 2002, on the Great River Ouse from 9am – 3pm, draw 7am.
