Four different 11lb barbel and a 12-pounder from Fishers Green have sparked speculation that the River Lee could produce a new record for the river this winter.

The present record stands at 12lb 12oz, a fish caught by Robin Monday in 1992, but with fish piling on weight following the recent floods a 12-pounder at this time of the year could well be another 1lb heavier later in the season.

The speculation is well-founded considering that the Fishers Green barbel have flourished so well in the past two years.

The most recent captures are Bob Hornegold’s 11lb 8oz fish (pictured) and Gary Newland’s barbel of 11lb 4oz.

David Olsen from Cheshunt fished Spam on a size 6 hook to 8lb line to take the venue best this season at 12lb (pictured).
