New, slim profile is ideal for outdoor activities

Zippo©, one of the most trusted and recognized brands in the world, has introduced the Zippo Hand Warmer, a new liquid-fuel warmer perfect for every outdoors activity from sailing and fishing to golfing and walking, to skiing and camping.

101119Open_745577520.jpgIts sleek, ultra thin profile allows it to slip easily into pockets and gloves without the bulk of similar warmers, making sure that your hands are toasty warm with minimum fuss.

The Zippo Hand Warmer can produce more than ten times the heat of traditional warmers and lasts up to 12 hours on just 0.4 ounces of Zippo’s Premium Lighter Fluid that produces little odour.

The platinum-catalyzed glass fibre burner offers quick and easy lighting, producing a radiant heat without a flame. The Zippo Hand Warmer also has a convenient temperature indicator, which makes it easy to determine that the burner has started heating.

The Hand Warmer has a suggested retail value of £20.35, and is backed by a one-year guarantee.

As an added benefit, the Zippo Hand Warmer also comes complete with a can of Zippo Premium Lighter Fluid, making it ready to use right out of the package, as well as a cosy warming bag and handy filling cup accessories.

Zippo Hand Warmer Review by Graham Marsden

101119zippo_001_760862972.jpgIt looks like a giant sized Zippo cigarette lighter, the one that we’re all familiar with, and my first impression was that it is well made with quality materials. But it’s performance that really matters and I looked forward to trying it where it mattered – at the waterside.

I was sent the Zippo Hand Warmer for review in spring this year and being as I’ve always had a policy of reviewing products as an everyday consumer and not as a deskbound journalist I decided I would wait until early winter before trying it out. After all, it would be difficult to really know how effective it was if your hands are already warm from the late spring sunshine and you’re fishing without a fleece or waterproof jacket.

The instructions and the usual safety warnings about filling and using the hand warmer were printed on both sides of an A5 sheet in about as many languages as Heinz have got varieties, with the result that some people will need a strong magnifying glass to be able to read them. I did wonder if they should have come with another safety warning about strained eyesight.

Negatives to one side though, I followed the instructions and within a few minutes I had the hand warmer half filled with lighter fuel, which was enough for a six hour session. I’d fuelled and lighted it at home so that it would be well and truly warm in the cloth bag by the time I’d got tackled up. I needn’t have worried about that though as it was up to its full warmth potential within a few minutes, so in future I’ll light it when I get there.

101119zippo_003_516158743.jpgIf you prefer something quite a lot hotter you can use it without the bag – but be careful as the naked device does get about as hot as you can bear it on your hands and too hot for more delicate parts of the body – so if you’re thinking about removing it from the bag and stuffing it down your trousers, forget it!

As a hand warmer though, which is what it is meant for, it’s very good and it lasts at least the full six hours on a half fill and 12 hours on full, which is a generous amount of time without having to go to the trouble of refilling it; which isn’t really any trouble at all. In fact, so far it has lasted much longer than the stated time.

101119zippo_004_501647240.jpgOne concern I had was if there would be any smell, or any kind of fuel contamination, that could transfer from my hands to my bait. Obviously, you need to take care not to get any fuel on your hands (or to wash them thoroughly afterwards) if you have to refill it at the waterside. Exactly the same consideration if you, like many anglers, use a petrol-powered stove. There is hardly any smell at all from the hand warmer when it’s burning and it wasn’t a concern at all.

101119zippo_005_429485644.jpgIf you’re sat there this winter, particularly when fishing a non-active method, on a cold and frosty day, the Zippo Hand Warmer can be very comforting. It’s not cheap, that’s for sure, but when you consider that you could spend much more than the cost of the Zippo on disposable hand warmers over a few months then it puts a different light on things.

In spite of the many doubts I had before I tried it I must admit to being very impressed with the Zippo Hand Warmer. It is warm in the bag, hot out of it, lasts for a generously long time and looks exactly like what it is; a quality bit of kit.

And here’s something the Zippo people definitely will not have thought about – drop it in your box of maggots for a couple and minutes and they’ll be wriggling around like good ‘uns, just like they do in summer!
