Environmental groups have been campaigning against over-abstraction for years – with mixed results. It’s widely accepted that we take far too much water from some of our rivers already, especially the fragile chalk streams, and this is a completely unsustainable situation.

Even so, as Damian Carrington reports in today’s Guardian, the new water bill opens up the possibility of a doubling in water abstraction.
