It’s getting more and more common these days to find many general coarse rods that break down into two equal lengths so that they can be ready in an instant when you get to your chosen spot; increasingly this is also becoming true of feeder rods which have a fitted quivertip.

As well as being ready for immediate action when you arrive in your swim they can also be left around the house in this state with a reel fitted in case you want to slip down to your fishery for a quick couple of hours at short notice – if you have an understanding wife that is! It does, however, mean that with 6ft sections they may be a little long for the average matchman to trasnsport but modern holdalls have evolved to cope and most won’t find this a problem. With fewer joints it seems likely that the rod may perform better in terms of curve than its predecessors which came in three pieces.

There is no doubt that this one is a meaty rod, having a recommended line rating going up to 12lb and feeling it, you have no reason to doubt it. It will cast really heavy feeders and method feeders quite a distance and hold large fish very well. I had intended using it for big chub, which it will be OK for, but I rather fancy it is more for bigger barbel and carp and although the biggest barbel I have had on it so far was 7lb 8oz it did put a nice bend in the rod.

Best fish so far on the TX Feeder, a 7lb 8oz barbel

What wins this rod over for me is the screw down reel seat; many manufacturers now opt for screw-up seats where the threads are still exposed after the reel is fitted and I can’t abide those. It is also equipped with 6 triple-legged rings before the four single-legged rings and then the quivertip. There are three quivertips of 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5oz included and these are nicely tuned to the rod although I’ve only used the softer glass ones so far, typically the strongest one is constructed from stiffer carbon.

In action you feel confident in its casting ability and similarly when playing a fish. The tips delivered the right amount of sensitivity and all told this is a really nice rod to own and fairly reasonably priced too at sub £100. If you’re looking for something a bit meatier for your river or big lake fishing then the Prodigy TX Specialist Feeder will fit the bill.
