They Say
No fisherman wants to watch fish moving or others catching without being able to stick their own line in the water, but a muscle or joint injury can lead to every fisherman’s nightmare – the one that got away!

Continuous casting in all weathers can leave many fishermen prone to suffering from repetitive strain injury (RSI), also known as tenosynovitis, in the wrists as well as the elbows, shoulders and back.

To ensure every season starts and finishes with a tight line, physiotherapist Julia Trevor recommends anglers should pay just as much attention to their muscles and ligaments as the contents of their tackle box.

“While surveying your potential peg, take 10 minutes to do a series of exercises to warm up the muscles,” said Julia.

Aerotherm

“Launching into a day’s fishing cold without relaxing the joints can cause unnecessary stress on the body, which you are probably only aware of once it’s too late.”

“As well as performing warm-up exercises, it would be beneficial to the fisherman to repeat these exercises every hour and wear a sports support, especially on existing injuries and cold-sensitive joints,” recommends Julia.

Standing for long periods in all climates can cause the muscles to seize-up, making them prone to injury. So it is worthwhile to keep moving and invest in a Vulkan neoprene support.

The patented spiral lining of Vulkan Neoprene supports stimulates micro-circulation, removes excess perspiration and helps keep the muscles and joints warm even when inactive.

Designed by two of the world’s leading professors in sports and orthopaedic medicine, the Aerotherm closed-cell concept retains body heat whilst increasing the elasticity of joints and muscles.

Prevention is always better than cure, but for those unfortunate enough to suffer with an existing injury the Vulkan range of supports could help to improve their catch.

Layer construction

The Vulkan wrist support is ideal for sprains caused by casting. Providing both support and warmth, it protects the much-used tendons leading from the thumb to the wrist, as well as the wrist joint itself.

As the wrist is constantly used in many everyday activities it is consequently under a lot of pressure making it more vulnerable to injury.

The shoulders and back also come under attack numerous times during an average fishing session whether it be from bending and twisting when netting the fish to land, casting, wading through a raft of weeds or even carrying kit.

The Vulkan shoulder and back supports keep joints warm and reduce the risk of stiffening up. The back support is particularly effective in relieving lumbago, sciatica and lower back pain, while the full shoulder support alleviates inflammation of the joints and tendonitis.

Distributed in the UK by Mobilis Healthcare Group, Vulkan’s neoprene supports are available for all muscle and joints of the body in extra small, small, medium, large and extra large.

FISHINGmagic VERDICT

I suffer from pain in the knee from time to time and the Vulkan Neoprene Knee-Free Support has made a big difference as far as pain relief and comfort are concerned. A little hot in the warmest weather but still better than suffering the pain I normally would.

I can see this knee support being something I shall wear all through winter to prevent the pain arising in the first place. It’s very comfortable and definitely makes a big difference.
