The Environment Agency report that:

Workshops are being held on 28 November at the Pioneer Centre in Cleobury Mortimer, DY14 8JG and 29 November at the Ludlow Food Centre, Bromfield, SY8 2JR from 18:00 to 21:00 with speakers from a range of organisations discussing ways of maintaining the river landscapes. The aim is to foster greater involvement from local communities in caring for the river.

Environment Officer Kevin Heede, will be discussing the Environment Agency’s role in supporting waterways and funding means, like the Catchment Restoration Fund.

He said:

“These workshops are a great opportunity to bring together a whole range of people who each have a stake in the future of our river. I’m looking forward to sharing information and best practice with all of those involved. Much hard work has gone in to getting the river to where it is today and we are all proud of the vibrant ecology it now supports.

We must remember however that it is a delicate ecology, vulnerable to problems such as excessive siltation. These workshops are important in terms of raising awareness of this ecology and of measures we can all take to protect it.”

Mike Morris, Senior Project Manager at the Severn Rivers Trust, outlined the role the community can play:

“Through the Teme Pilot Partnership we aim to get local communities talking about what they want to see from their river. In many ways we are asking them to guide the management plan and articulate their vision of the river.

We also want to help describe the benefits, not just ecological but also economic, of improving your local waterway – this is an especially important message for farmers, who depend more than most upon the river.”
