Browning Youth Masters (8th August)

A local heat of the Browning Youth Masters, the largest junior angling competition in the country, was held on the Burghfield Match Lake today. The top three anglers in the heat qualifying for the prestigious final to be held later this month at Leicester’s Glebe Water.

Olly Hutchins didn’t make the frame but included this cracking carp in his net

Despite temperatures in the sun rocketing well over the 100 degree mark the youngsters fared well and kept fish coming to the net regularly during the four-hour match.

The winner was Reading Fishing Club’s Ben Holland who fished the pole with shallow fished corn beneath a regular spray of pellet to take an all carp catch of 41lb 10oz. Runner up was Twyford’s Shane Davis who alternated between pole in open water and method feeder tight to the reeds to take carp to double figures, tench and bream for 38lb 10oz. The final qualifying place went to Datchet’s Raymond Davis who fished corn on the waggler over groundbait for a mostly carp net of 35lb 9oz.

We wish all the finalists the best of luck.

Car Park Lake captures (7th August)

The Carp Park lake on our famous Dynamite Yateley Complex has gone completely crazy of late, giving up all but one of it’s resident carp…

To kickstart the month, Essential Team man Jon McAllister banked Heather at an awesome weight of 46lb 08oz, the second time she’s been out this season. Heather made an appearance at first light from the Beach.

The very same day Darren Miles had Chunky in his net at 42lb 09oz. Darren, who has been on super form this season having had three 40lb Carp Park lake carp on the bank went on to continue his success a couple of days later with the capture of Pearly Tail at 36lb from Dessy’s. It looks like there’s no stopping him!

Mark Hunter (aka ‘Numpty Mark’) this morning landed Big Orange from Trumptens at 43lb 09oz. Reports are that she has healed up excellently from the damage she displayed at the end of last season, which is wonderful news.

Darren Miles again sets the standards by hooking, but unfortunately losing another carp this morning.

Fred with one of his 9lb barbel
Fishers Green (6th August)

The warm weather has made for tricky conditions on the rivers but there have been occasions when the maggot or particle approach has persuaded even the most lethargic of barbel to start grubbing on the bottom.

This was the approached used by Cheshunt angler Fred Hampton to take one of the best multiple catches of the season so far from the Old River Lee at Fishers Green.

Fishing a Drennan oval feeder packed with hemp and maggot Fred worked his swim into a feeding frenzy despite the conditions and during the course of his daylight session five barbel picked up his triple maggot fished on a size 14 hook to 6lb hook length and 8lb main line.

The barbel weighed in at: 10lb 4oz, 9lb 10oz, 9lb 8oz, 9lb 2oz and a baby of 4lb 10oz.

Quite remarkably this was Fred’s first ever session on the river…What will he catch when he gets to know the place?!

Jones Pit record catfish (5th August)

Mark Owens landed this very impressive catfish of 44lb from Lake 2 of our Jones Pit fishery on Saturday 2 August and sets a new Jones Pit record.

Mark Owens with his Jones Pit record moggi of 44lb!

The fish fell to Mainline boilies offered on a long hair and fished at 100 yards range to 20lb Fireline and a self-tied rig, using Fox Drifter line and a size 10 hook. Mark also managed to bank a moggi of 20lb on the Friday evening, and lost another fish during the early hours of Saturday morning.

After a 30 minute battle with this beast, fishery bailiff John Claridge helped to weigh the fish and also managed to record some footage of the capture on video.

This was only Mark’s third session on the famous Jones Pit complex and is an amazing result, especially when you consider he has only been fishing for this species for one month. He’s back up there again soon to try and land another.
