The Environment Agency has donated fishing equipment seized from prosecuted anglers to a fishing club set up to encourage Worcester youngsters to take up the sport.

The Agency has donated 12 rods and reels to the club based at the Ronkswood Community Centre. The equipment has been forfeited as a result of successful prosecutions for illegal angling in the Agency’s Welsh region. As well as the rods, the Agency has donated other equipment and will assist the club in the future with training and guidance.

Local angler Dave Yeomans formed the club some years ago to help local youngsters but it has always lacked the funding for basic equipment for its members to start angling and this is where the Agency stepped in. The scheme has proved successful and the club is hoping to increase the places available next year.

Environment Agency Fisheries officer, Andy Roberts, says: “These rods came into the Agency’s possession due to legal action taken against those who were angling illegally. Therefore it is great to see that they are going to be put to good use. The Agency has been involved in a number of initiatives to support groups who would not normally have the opportunity to go fishing and we are pleased to have been able to help.”
