After a good end to the river season that resulted in me catching some very nice chub, which you will hopefully have read about here on FishingMagic, I decided it was time to get out and do some tench fishing…OK it sounds a bit mad because it is still a bit too cold but I thought I’d give it a go and decided to do a couple of days on a southern stillwater.

I got to the lake at about 3pm and picked a swim with the wind on my back and got set up. I put all three rods out at about sixty yards, all baited with 10mm Fish Frenzy Tutti Frutti boilies and then I spodded out about ten spods of mixed maggots, 3mm and 6mm Fish Frenzy pellets and 6mm soft hookable boilies flavoured with Sweetcorn Extract.

That night I had a tench of 7lb 8oz and then the next morning I had one of 6lb, followed by another at 7lb after which the swim died and that was it for the day. I got the rods back out on the same spots again that night and baited up again, but did not catch anything until the next morning when I had a lovely fish of 8lb followed by a huge tench of 9lb 10oz that gave me a real battle, and when I landed it I thought it was a lot bigger.

That was it for me; time to go home but it just goes to show that if you are willing to put up with the cold and the wet weather you could have a result, so get out and give it a go this Easter the tench are definitely feeding.

The bait and tackle I used comprised: 2lb test curve rods, freespool reels loaded with 10lb Nash Hardcore line, 2oz Nash inline leads, Nash 10lb hardcore hooklink, and size ten Nash Fang X hooks baited with 10mm Fish Frenzy boilies.
