The Jan Porter Bolt Rig (Presented by Gary Knowles)

I don’t know what this rig is called but I first saw it in a Jan Porter article in Coarse Fisherman a couple of years ago, so I’m not claiming it as my own!. It is a very simple, but effective way of safely fishing a feeder with a bolt effect. Basically you thread a snap link up your main line. Then the sleeve from a carp safety clip (that’s a laugh). Then you tie a swivel (approx size 8) to the mainline and then your hooklink. That’s it. You can then clip your feeder direct to the link. This rig has loads of benefits including.

  • It is totally safe, unlike carp safety clips when used for the smaller species, the feeder will come away from the mainline if a break off occurs
  • It is 100% tangle free
  • It is cheap, simple and quick to set up
  • You can change the size of your feeder or to a straight lead in seconds
  • The friction between the snap link and sleeve gives enough purchase to produce a bolt effect
  • The rig is most effective with feeders of 50grms (2oz) or more

About the Rigs Page

The Rigs Page is a library of features to illustrate all those rigs that will be useful to both beginners and experienced anglers.

The rigs can be extremely simple and well known, or very complicated and little known, it doesn’t matter providing they make some kind of sense and have a really practical application.

It could be a standard running leger rig that a beginner will appreciate seeing in pictures, or a very complicated anti-eject carp rig that the experienced carp angler would like to see.

If you wish to contribute a rig to this section please remember that the emphasis is on illustration rather than words. Good line drawings are fine in the absence of photographs. Please send to graham@fishingmagic.com
