A Maverick MP has changed his name to Haddock – in a bid to boost the fishing industry.

Austin Mitchell, Labour MP for Great Grimsby, has signed a deed poll which comes into effect on Friday – the start of Seafood Week.

Mr Mitchell, 68, said: “The idea is to encourage people to think fish, cook fish, eat fish and buy fish.

“If they do that, it’s good for the industry and good for Grimsby.” He added.

“I’ve signed the deed poll and it takes effect on Friday, for the start of Seafood Week.”

Mr Mitchell at first insisted the name-change was for all time but it looks like he may be codding us.

“As long as it’s fun, I shall carry on,” he said, and added: “I have to admit, I’ll probably go back to Mitchell at the end of the week. My family think I’m mad.”

The idea came from Young’s Seafood, one of Grimsby’s biggest employers.
