REVIEWED BY BARRIE RICKARDS

I think in the whole running of the two videos I only parted company with them once and that was when they said, near the beginning of part one, that barbel had long been regarded as elusive fish. I don’t think that’s true at all – big ones maybe, but not all barbel. And incidentally, there’s no shortage of big barbel in these videos – six fish over 16lbs is rather mind-boggling stuff.

The real highlights of Part One are the details of margin fishing (and they do mean margin fishing), the brilliant filming of feeding on the loose offerings (and bait), the recognition of patrol routes and the superb coverage of rigs and tackle. It is terrific stuff, and ideally suited to both new barbel anglers and experienced ones.

Part Two deals with winter fishing, with floods, and with fining down after floods. It deals with reading the new high water, with using information gleaned during the warmer months, with the use of PVA stringers, etc, etc. With how to use leads properly, with the best hooks to use. And they catch all those big fish. What’s more there’s no shouting and war-whooping to accompany their captures, but their pleasure shows through despite (or because of) that.

BARRIE RICKARD’S VERDICT

The only downside is the obligatory kissing of fish! Why oh why do people stoop, literally, to this clich
