Frank’s Weekly Fishing Column

29th June 2001

Members fishing the Dee report lots of small dace and chub, whichis good news for the future recovery of the river after last year’spollution. Also there are large shoals of fry in the margins. I amcollating reports of any catches on this river so I really wouldappreciate catch details.

Bill Hempsall took my advice and fished the tiny river Cain tohave a good day with chub, dace, grayling and trout to 1-4-0.

Many members just do not realise what they have on their doorstep,I’m talking about the tiny River Gowy where I had a cracking sessionon Sunday evening, all washed down with a pint afterwards at theadjacent Nags Head. I only had some old maggots and kept flicking afew in while I tackled up a small stick float on my 11′ 6″ canal rod.My first cast the float had only gone a short way down the swim whenit dipped resulting in a plump dace. This action continued with roachand dace until I connected with a much larger fish. After someconfusion setting up my landing net one handed I slid a chub ofbetween 2.5 and 3lbs over the rim. My swim went dead and I moved tothe next upstream peg and immediately started catching dace androach, fishing my short session with a nice river perch of about8ozs. I had a walk to the shallower section downstream where twoanglers informed me that they had been catching chub on bread flakethe previous evening but had only a few roach so far.

The Derwent needed some rain according to local bailiff Paul Buck, well we have had some and prospects look promising for the weekend.Paul reckons anglers have been catching some quality roach, perch andbream despite the low and clear conditions.

Sean Johnson had a 20lbs mirror carp from Grey Mist Mere; CraigChallinor bettered this with a mirror of 22-8-0. Dave Slater fishedonly 4 feet from the bank to take mirrors of 15-4-0 and 14-12-0 plusa common of 15-7-0. Frank Thomas fished on Tuesday with caster andmaggot on the pole for a succession of perch and roach.

The large lake at Sandiway is producing bream to 8lbs; BailiffBarry Flemming witnessed on member land a fish of 7-11-0. The smalllake is still producing tench and roach plus some small rudd. Maggotor caster seems to be best baits.

Appleton Reservoir trout match series, draw 6pm on Tuesdayevening.
