Frank’s Weekly Fishing Column

6th July 2001

Cicily Mill Pool is fishing its head off for tench, crucians andlots of quality roach. Keith Hendry had tench to 3lbs, crucians to1.5lbs, and roach to 1lb in a short afternoon session on Tuesday. Allfish took luncheon meat fished tight up to the marginal rushes. AlanEvans had 40 tench in an early morning session on pole-fished meatand corn. Just a reminder that in the interests of fish welfarepellets are banned on this fishery. Anglers should use the car parkbut in emergency please park sensibly so as not to obstruct both thegate and roadway.

Ackers Pit is really on form for roach and bream plus occasionalcarp, both grass and mirror. Tony Dennett reports taking an eel onmaggot that weighed in at 2-12-0.

The River Dee is producing good catches of small chub and barbelplus grayling to 1-8-0 and there are shoals of fry in the marginseverywhere. Gary Bibby had 12 grayling to 1.5lbs and 3 trout. Thereare lots of sea trout in the river at present. Reports of any catcheson this river are needed to assess its regeneration.

Tony Fielding has got it sussed on the large lake at Sandiwaywhere in a three-night session he had six carp, the best a common of19lbs. He also had tench to 5lbs.

The small lake produced plenty of tench action for Brian Andersonin an evening session (from my experience is the most productivetime) when he had 29 tench for an estimated 40lbs plus. All weretaken on caster over hemp and also included a few decent sized roacharound 1-8-0.

Rixton best early morning or late evening for tench as the brightconditions have effected paid to sport during the mid-day periodwhere only roach and small perch are generally being caught. Mostfish at Grey Mist can be seen cruising on the surface but plenty ofupper doubles reported. New member, Gary Graham fished the water forthe first time and had a mirror carp of 19-7-0 on his second cast.
