Anglers are worried about a recent letter sent to members of the British Sugar Sports and Social Club about the fishing on the famous Wissey Pools.

The club insinuates that pike have been illegally stocked by members into an adjacent club pond that was dug close to the main pools, just a few yards away from a river that contains pike. As a consequence they are threatening to close the section altogether.

Wissey Pools are a series of lakes which the River Wissey flows through at Wissington, in the Fens, home of the massive British Sugar factory. The lakes are highly regarded, primarily for the quality of the pike fishing, producing a number of 20lb-plus fish each year. They are also home to big zander and produced the Norfolk trout record.

A number of members have spoken to FISHINGmagic expressing their concern. One of them said, ‘The letter from Roger Preston, general secretary of the club, appears to be blaming pike anglers in general for this pike stocking, yet it is almost certain that the fish, which they say average 7 to 8lbs, got into the pond by natural means.’

He added. ‘To us it looks like they have a hidden agenda. We fear the club wants to kick out all the non-British Sugar staff, which number about 170, and restrict fishing to the 30-odd employees only.’

Roger Preston was unavailable for comment when FISHINGmagic phoned British Sugar for their side of the story.
