Hundreds of Fish Die

Hundreds of fish have died as a result of a serious pollution incident in the Salt Hill Stream, in Slough.

Environment Agency officers are on site investigating the pollution incident, which has spread over a two-mile stretch from Salt Hill Stream in Salt Hill Park, the end of the Chalvey Ditch to the River Thames.

The pollution entered Salt Hill Stream via a drain into the stream and the Environment Agency is working with Thames Water to locate the source of the pollution. Samples have been taken at various locations to identify what the pollution is.

JC Hall, Environment Officer at the Environment Agency, said:
“The Environment Agency and Thames Water are working very hard to minimise the effects of the pollution and to try and find the cause. The stream was home to several different fish species, including Chubb and Dace and the pollution looks as though it has wiped out a thriving and healthy fish population.”

At the moment no dead fish have been detected in the River Thames.

Members of the public can report pollution incidents by calling the Environment Agency’s emergency hotline on 0800 807060.
