Big Rik Belenger and I paid another visit to our favourite roach hotspot Sway Lake in Hampshire last Wednesday.

The bitter easterly wind that has been prevailing for the last week or so was a bit of a nuisance, blowing stiffly right to left across us, making controlling a waggler rather difficult. Coupled with the largely cloudless sky giving very bright conditions meant a large bag of redfins was never likely to be on the cards.

But by fishing as close as I could to the marginal drop off across the long narrow lake and loose feeding red and bronze maggots with a bit of hemp, I managed to winkle out three nice roach.

I fished a single red maggot on a size 20 Drennan barbless hook to 1.1lb hooklength and picked up fish of 1-13-5, 2-0-0 and 2-3-5. Unfortunately Rik couldn’t hook one, but he made an excellent photographer for the day.
