Species including dace, chub, barbel and roach from The EA’s Calverton Fish Farm have replenished the River Tame in Stockport, Irwell in Salford, Wheelock in Cheshire and Bury Lido Pool.

The Environment Agency say they are boosting stocks in these rivers to support the natural habitat and promote the breeding of certain species in these areas.  This level of stocking is part of long-term planning to manage the rivers in the region and  is intended to enhance the quantity and variation of species in rivers when stocks have been depleted or if they have been historically low.

Paul Bennett from the Environment Agency said:

“The new stocks of fish are good news for local angling clubs as well as the habitats around these rivers that will thrive from a larger fish population. Our rivers are the healthiest that they’ve been for over 20 years, such improvements in water quality allows all these fish to thrive in our waters, making the water environment a better place for wildlife and people.“
