Round 7 Penvose 29/7/01

The 7th round marked the mid point of the league with a matchcontested at Penvose Farm. Brilliant sunshine and very little windmeant this was going to be a hot one, probably the hottest day of theyear so far. Shorts were the order of the day and I had to endure amultitude of comments about my legs “Ah, what’s that glow” etc. Withquite a few of the St Columb members away at Andy Seery’s fishery forthe weekend numbers were depleted so just one section of 17 waspegged on the Match Lake. This was comfortable enough but wouldn’treally have taken any more.

Before the all-in a minute’s silence was observed to rememberlocal angler Don Kellow who sadly passed away this week. Then it wason with the action. Although fish were caught all round, some anglersincluding me were struggling. All the top weights came from theshallow end of the lake.

Alan Farnworth (Gwinear Peasants) on peg 15 had practised duringthe week and scored well offering paste down the inside. He opted tostick to this plan which proved to be a good one taking a successionof carp for a total of 29lb 8oz to secure the top spot. Opposite Alanon peg 1 John Shirley (Phoenix A) fished long and short lines to take25lb of mainly carp for the second spot. Dave Barnes (Clive’s Tackle)in corner peg 17 had to resort to 3 grains of corn on a size 12 toget through the bits. He did manage to find some carp and put 23lb8oz on the scales for 3rd. Simon Poynter (Bill Knott Bookies) drewpeg 4 and opted to fish maggot up in the water on the pole. He keptbusy all day amassing a 22lb 10oz mixed bag. 5th place went to the upand coming Simon Final (OB Joyful) on peg 13. A method feeder cast tothe point of the island was the successful tactic accounting for 19lb8oz of mainly carp. Mike Yates (Clive’s Tackle) on peg 11 startedshallow with maggot taking a few early carp. When things slowed up hewent down the edge with corn to add a few more in the last hourtaking his total to 16lb 10oz.

I managed to get the golden peg consolation prize but not muchelse the only relief being that my nearest rival Graham Curnow blewout as well. Round 8 next week will be at Oakside so stand by yourweed rakes boys!
