The people at Ecotopia are a bit excited about the FreeLoader – a portable solar powered charger for gadget freaks on the go. It’s a festival goers dream – providing solar powered battery charging for your iPod, mobile, PSP and Blackberry all in one go, whenever and wherever you need the power.

Pocket sized

Once charged, Freeloader’s internal battery can power an iPod for 18 hours, a mobile phone for 44 hours, a PSP for 2.5 hours, and a PDA for 22 hours.

Supplied in a tough but stylish aluminium body, and only weighing 185g, Freeloader can take the knocks of everyday life whether at Glastonbury Festival, on a business trip to New York, backpacking in the Andes, chilling on a Caribbean beach or carp fishing for a few days on your local lake.

FishingMagic Verdict

Great looking and pocket sized, this lightweight aluminium battery powered gadget charger pulls open to reveal two solar panels. It’s own internal battery is charged just by allowing it to soak up the sunlight. It works in cloudy weather but takes a little longer.

It will then power a mobile phone for up to 44 hours, an iPod for up to 18 hours, a PDA for up to 22 hours and a PSP for up to 21/2 hours. Once you’ve soaked up all the juice from the FreeLoader just charge it up again via the solar panels and the sun or through the USB if you’re near a computer.

It comes with loads of different adaptors to fit all kinds of devices.

And best of all, it really does work; it charged my mobile phone from flat in less than two hours. Long stay anglers and anyone away from a mains electricity supply will really benefit from this device.
